Reason #8 to Compete

We are Keeping Costs Low.

This has been a challenging one.  Every year our expenses go up and we strive to make each event better than the last.  The popularity of The Submission Series helps keep the Mind Body Soul getting better so your participation in both is very appreciated.

This year was a big one with the addition of the NEW MATS!  These mats are expensive and very much worth it.  Our goal is to offer the quality of the larger tournaments out there that are charging $100 plus for the 1st division and $80 plus for the second, but for an affordable rate.

We still offer Double Eliminations for the Beginners, Women and Children to offer a chance to get some extra practice, something you definitely don’t get at those big events and we are really trying to get more of the older crew out to compete in the Executive BJJ divisions (35 years and older).

This will be the 14th year of the Mind Body Soul and every year we strive to make YOUR tournament experience better.  If you have any suggestions to make it more enjoyable please let me know, It might not be fixed right away, but we are listening and will do our best for the next event.

We look forward to seeing you out,

Love and respect,

Mike Yackulic

Schedule for Mind Body Soul

clockThere is still so many things that I haven’t gotten around to mentioning for this years event.

The schedule that is posted (changed now) was from last year and I forgot to make this years adjustments.

We hope that this schedule will help speed up  the event, mostly by making sure Adult Kickboxing is at a different time than the BJJ events.  For those doing both it will make your day longer but you won’t have to worry about missing your event, or stressing out about running back and forth to compete in different divisions.

So here we go:

8am doors open

9am – Children 4-6 Game, Women BJJ/No Gi

9:30am – Children 7 BJJ/No Gi, Adult Kickboxing

10am – Children 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 BJJ/No Gi

11am – SUPERFIGHTS, Adult Muay Thai

12pm – Purple, Brown, Black Belt BJJ

1pm – Blue Belt BJJ, Children’s Kickboxing

2pm – Submission Series

3pm – Adv & Elite No Gi

3pm – White Belt BJJ, Novice & Intermediate No Gi

4pm – ALL ABSOLUTE BJJ

We ask that all adults wait until 9am to weigh in so we can get the children processed, unless you are competing in Kickboxing.  You can weigh in up until 1 hour before your event is scheduled to run (so if it is slotted for 2pm, weigh ins close at 1pm).

We hope this schedule will also allow people to come when they need as opposed to waiting all day.  We do our best to stay as close to schedule as possible and it stresses me out personally a great deal when we are behind.  So trust me, I am doing my best.

One of the reasons we slow down is the Double Elimination format for beginners and children BJJ, but I really love that people get more experience, so we aren’t changing that.

The next biggest reason is lack of refs/Volunteers.  If you are would like to help volunteer as a timekeeper/scorekeeper (a very simple job) please offer your assistance.  If you are capable of reffing, please email me at myackulic@arashido.com to let me know.  We are also having a reffing clinic at our school to prepare for the event at the North side Arashi Do from 7-9pm.

Good luck to all… still lots more to mention.

Pre- Registration Time!

Power BankPre Registration is live and we have a special gift for the first 200 Adults that register.

These things are GREAT!  Charge it up and take em with you.  Camping, driving or just in case of an emergency (they hold a charge for up to 6 months).  They carry 4400 mAh which is enough to fully charge your iPhone and retail between $50-$60.

I’m kinda a gadget techy guy and I really like it.  I’ve been using mine for about 6 months now and it’s super handy.

Anyways, onto registration.  Please make sure you have the right divisions.  If anything is missing please let me know or if you are unsure please email me at myackulic@arashido.com

Reason #5 & 6 to Compete

1bjj Reason #5 – It makes you better in every way.  Competing is a test of your Mind, Body and Soul.  You get to test your technical ability in a stressful environment.

If you started BJJ for Self Defence reasons then it gives you a chance to test your newly acquired skills in a safe environment.  You can see what works well and what needs more attention.

If you started BJJ to get in shape, well training for a competition is one of the best ways to get in shape.  Hours of drilling and rolling sheds the weight right off and builds killer cardio.

Competition is also great for testing out your heart, not just the physical organ itself but YOUR heart… are you going to give up if you get in a bad spot?  What about when you are tired?  It’s easy to stop in the club, especially if your training partners let you.  There is no stopping in competition.  Competition truly tests your Mind Body and Soul.

1bjj2

Reason #6 – It gives you a chance to strengthen you bond with your teammates and coaches.  If you want to do well in competition, and I mean you really want to win, it takes effort.  Not just on your behalf, but your team.  It is not something you can do alone.

Your need training partners to work with, a coach to guide you and they have to be interested in helping you.  It is no surprise that many BJJ Schools call their team a family, it is.  For some people the bond you have with your teammates is stronger than the ones you have with your siblings.

Your teammates have see you sweat, cry and bleed on the mats, hopefully the mats were cleaned afterwards no one wants to train on tear soaked mats.  You have confided with your coach on you insecurities and they guide you to make the best decision for you.  All this happens with prepping for competition, this is the REAL test.

The competition itself is a chance to show off and have fun, to see what all your hard work and your teams hard work has become.  Your victory is shared with your team and the weight of your loses are carried by them to, as a team.

Don’t deny yourself the chance to build your bond with your BJJ Family.  Prepare for the competition together and represent your Family on the mats.

Good luck in training,

Reason #4 – Double Elimination!

ROBERTO_CYBORG_ABREU_2009_BJJ_ChampionshipsGet more BANG for your BUCK!

We know it can be stressful for beginners and children… well actually it probably is stressful to everyone, but we want to offer some of the competitors a chance to get a second match if the first one doesn’t go your way.

Double Elimination matches will be only in the Gi divisions for the following competitors, No Gi will be Single Elimination:

All Children and Teens

Women’s Gi

Novice Adult Gi

Executive Gi (35years +) Novice only

Register_Button

We hope that this will encourage more of the beginners to come out and give competing a try.  If you have a friend/training partner/teammate that falls in the above divisions, make sure they don’t miss out on this great opportunity.  The adult Novice Division is for those with 9 months of experience or less, so next year they won’t get this opportunity.

We do ask that everyone is patient with the event.  We try to schedule to allow for the Double Elimination, but is challenging.  We are happy to continue to offer this and not raise the price to compete… but more about that soon.

If you would like to help with the event please email me to offer your help or just ask day of.  We need timekeeper/scorekeepers, referees and service people.  Any time you can donate is very much appreciated.

Good luck in training,

Mike Yackulic

Reason #3… NEW MATS… AGAIN!

pre-register-now-400x400

With the Mind Body Soul growing in popularity every year we need to adapt.  It is a great thing to have more people coming out.  The more people we have the more divisions we can make to keep the competition fair.

This year we have several new divisions for the growing interest.

L1matsast year we got a whole side of mats new for the tournament.  We this year we picked up a few more.  Not enough to complete the other side but enough to add some rings to help things run faster.

Our goal is to improve every year and move one step closer the IBJJF format.  One of the suggestions a couple years ago was to get new mats.  So last year we invested in 4 rings worth of roll out mats and this year a couple more rings.  These mats are sweet.  They are 4cm thick as opposed to 2.5 cm thick puzzle mats  (much better foam used too) and the rings will be 11 sqm larger (6m x 6m).

I know everyone that gets a chance to compete on them will enjoy them very much.  For those that don’t, we are doing our best to outfit the whole event with them and if we get a strong turnout (400+) we will be much closer to reaching that goal.

On top of that we are keeping the entry fee down, but more on that soon.

MBS ProfileWe are getting really excited to see everyone out this year… we have a few more surprises that will make the tournament smoother and a more fun experience as well.

Reason # 2 to Compete at MBS – Women Come Out!

1wWe have women who compete!!!  Enough to split up into divisions.  I remember what the scene was like in Edmonton in 1997 when BJJ tournaments were a brand new thing.  Barely enough guys came out to make it worth while, so weight classes were jammed together so we would have somebody to fight.  Experience levels? No way, my first match ever was against a Judo Black Belt (I had some Karate exp, and no BJJ at all).  This went on for several years, fighting guys many times 40-60lbs heavier than me.  So I can appreciate the situation the women are in now.

The good news is, there is a lot of you.  We just need to get you out to the same place at the same time.  If we had all the women who competed in Alberta for the last 2 years come out we would have over 30 of you.  Enough to split by weight and experience.

We recognize that it isn’t easy, so we lowered the entry fee to $50 (for Gi and No Gi) to help build the community of women competitors.  What we ask of you is to help encourage the women in your club to “Just come out, and see how it looks”.  Women are encouraged to pre-register, but we will honour the pre-reg price day of for them as well.

On top of that, Women BJJ divisions will be Double Elimination so you can get another chance if you are nervous for your first match.

I (Mike Yackulic) will personally arrange the womens divisions.  If you do not feel you are ready for it I will listen to you and make necessary adjustments or return your money.

You know there are a few women in the club what do a great job in class, they are tough, they roll with guys all the time, maybe their confidence isn’t where they want it to be but they know enough to compete against someone of similar weight and exp.  Lets rally together and encourage them to come out.

The more women that show up, the more fair and fun it will be and you know that we only need one good tournament that the women support to really get the ball rolling.

Register_Button

MBS ProfileIf there is anything I can do to help with the women competing, please email me at: myackulic@arashido.com I am very open to suggestions.

Best of luck in training and we will see you soon.
